Coronal Polish Certificate

California Dental Educators is proud to offer a Dental Board of California-approved Coronal Polish Course (CP123). This course is designed for dental assistants seeking certification to legally perform Coronal Polishing procedures, and those planning to enroll in our Pit and Fissure Sealant course to qualify for the RDA license.

Important Regulatory Regulations

Dental Assistants in California may only perform coronal polishing after completing a board-approved course. The earned certificate must be posted in the treatment area where the procedure is performed.

Course Requirements

Prerequisites (required within one week of registration and before receiving course material) You must have all of the following sent to californiadentaleducators@gmail.com

  • An 8-Hour Infection Control Certificate

  • A current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (AHA or ARC only)

  • Chairside assisting experience

Chairside Assisting Experience 

  • Sitting in a dental chair with patient in the reclined position accurately

  • Use of the air/water syringe and suction simultaneously

  • Hold and maneuver a mouth mirror and other instruments simultaniously

  • Know tooth numbers and surfaces

 

Course Overview

This course includes 12-hours of course material

  • 4 Hours Didactic – Home study lecture materials, sent after prerequisites are received

  • 4 Hours Lab/Pre-Clinical – Hands-on instruction on typodonts at our Rocklin facility

  • 4 Hours Clinical Procedure – Performed on three of your own patients at our Rocklin facility

Topics Covered

  • Infection control protocols

  • Operatory setup and polishing material prep

  • Stain and plaque formation principles

  • Coronal polishing techniques for:

    • Adults

    • Children

    • Orthodontic patients

    • Dental appliances

Clinical Experience

Students will bring three (3) qualified patients, at scheduled time during the second half of the course. 

  • First patient 2:30​

  • Second patient 3:30

  • Third patient 4:30

Qualifications for Patients:

  • No Calculus

  • No orthodontic appliances (braces or Invisalign attachments)

  • Minimum of 24 natural teeth (crowns are not natural teeth)

  • No dentures or bridges

  • Age requirement

    • ​No childern under the age of 12​​

    • Ages 12-18 must have patient or guardian present

  3.  Course materials will be emailed for your home study portion of the course.

PPE Requirements

Students must wear full PPE during lab and clinical sessions. Required items:

  • 8 Level 2 (or higher) disposable masks

  • 1 box of properly fitted medical-grade exam gloves

  • Disposable isolation gowns or cuffed lab jackets

  • Safety goggles or glasses with side shields

  • Optional: Face shield

PPE Kits Available

If you do not have PPE, a pre-packed PPE kit can be ordered and waiting for you when you arrive at the class. Order your PPE Kit in the toolbar so you are fully prepared for your preclinical session.

Certificate & Compliance

Upon successful completion, students receive an Coronal Polishing ertificate, which is required before performing this procedure.

This certificate must be maintained and displayed at the dental facility to meet compliance standards.
