Pit & Fissure Sealants

California Dental Educators is proud to offer a Dental Board of California-approved Pit and Fissure Sealants Course (PF155). This course is designed for individuals applying to become a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) and is required for licensure.

Important Regulatory Regulations

The Pit and Fissure Sealants course is a requirement for all Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) applicants under the new Dental Board regulations, effective July 1, 2025. The certificate earned cannot be used, until the holder recieves their RDA License.

Prerequisites

You must have all of the following sent to californiadentaleducators@gmail.com  (required within 2 days of registration and before receiving course material)

  1. 8-Hour Infection Control Certificate from a Dental Board-approved provider

  2. Coronal Polishing Certificate from a Dental Board-approved provider

  3. Current BLS Certification must be from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (No online-only courses) 

   OR

  1. Current RDA License​

  2. Current BLS Certification Must be from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross (No online-only courses) 

Course Overview

This course includes 16-hours of course material

  • 4 Hours Didactic – Home study lecture materials, sent after prerequisites are received

  • 4 Hours Lab/Pre-Clinical – Hands-on instruction on typodonts at our Rocklin facility

  • 8 Hours Clinical Procedure – Performed on four of your own patients at our Rocklin facility

 

Course Patient Requirements

This course requires four (4 ) of your own patients

Each patient must:

  • Be 14 years or older (14-18) must have a parent or guardian present in the office

  • Have one tooth in each quadrant for qualification

    • Qualified tooth is premolars and molars (no third molars)

    • No restorations (composite or amalgam fillings, or partial pit and fissure sealants)

    • No cavities or suspected cavities

  • All patients must have a signed authorization and health history form signed by a dentist. Forms will be included in your course materil)​

Course Days and Times

Friday 5:30pm-9:30 PM exam and lab practice on manikins

Saturday 9:00-6:00 patient day:

  • First Patient 9:30 AM to 10:30 AM

  • Second Patient 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM

Lunch 12:30 PM to 1:30 PM

  • Third Patient 2:00 PM to 3:00 PM

  • Fourth & Final Patient 3:30 PM to 4:30 PM

4:30-6:00 is for late or behind schedule on patients,

Final paperwork, and sterilization.

Course Competency Expectations

To successfully complete the course, students must:

  • Use the air/water syringe and suction simultaneously

  • Hold and maneuver a mouth mirror and Pit and Fissure Sealants effectively

  • Maintain a dry field of the oral cavity when applying Pit and Fissure Sealnts

  • Know all tooth numbers and surfaces

  • Demonstrate safe and effective Pit and Fissure Sealant technique

  • Pass the didactic and clinical exams with a score of 75% or higher

PPE Requirements

Students must wear full PPE during lab and clinical sessions. Required items:

  • 8 Level 2 (or higher) disposable masks

  • 1 box of properly fitted medical-grade exam gloves

  • Disposable isolation gowns or cuffed lab jackets

  • Safety goggles or glasses with side shields

  • Optional: Face shield

PPE Kits Available

If you do not have PPE, a pre-packed PPE kit can be ordered and waiting for you when you arrive at the class. Order your PPE Kit in the toolbar so you are fully prepared for your preclinical session.

Certificate & Compliance

  • Upon successful completion, students receive an Pit and Fissure Sealants certificate

  • This certificate  is only for registering for your RDA Licensure

  • This certificate cannot be used unless you have an RDA License
