About the Course

Dental X-Ray Certification Course

Approved by the Dental Board of California (X087)


We are a Dental Board of California-approved provider for the Dental X-Ray Course. This course meets all state requirements for obtaining a Dental X-Ray Certificate and is ideal for dental assistants, sterilization techs, and front office staff.


Prerequisites  

Prerequisites are due after you register. You will receive your course materials for the exam preparation; this takes at least eight hours to complete the study guide that is due on the Thursday of class. email the following documents to: California Dental Educators

 

Do Not Have Necessary Prerequisites

 

If you do not have the prerequisites you can sign up at California Dental Educators.

  • 8-Hour Infection Control Certificate

    8-Hour Infection Control

  • Current BLS (Basic Life Support) Certification

    Must be from the American Heart Association or American Red Cross.

    Note: Online-only BLS courses are not accepted.

Course Structure

1. Lecture Portion – Home StudyIncludes:

  • Anatomical landmarks

  • Dental radiology fundamentals

  • Infection control

  • Equipment use



2. Preclinical Lab Thursday, Friday, and Saturday– Our Office in Rocklin, CA

Practice x-ray techniques on manikins using handheld NOMAD  and Wall Mount devices:


  • 1 Hour of review lecture study guide and take exam

  • Infection control protocol

  • Bitewings

  • Periapical films

  • Bisecting and paralleling techniques

  • Full-mouth series (FMS)


    You’ll complete:

  • Two sets of 4 bitewings

  • Three sets of 18-film full-mouth series


3. Clinical Portion Saturday and Sunday-Our Office in Rocklin, CA

Live Patient X-RaysBring four qualified patients to the Rocklin office.

  • 1 patient on Saturday afternoon of class

  • Remaining 3 patients on Sunday

  • Patient schedule will be sent the Monday prior to class


Patient Requirements


Each patient must:

  • Must be 18 years or older

  • Must not have had a full mouth series of X-rays in the past 12 months. A full mouth series = 18 individual x-rays, 1 panoramic, or 1 cephalometric image. (Bitewing x-rays (BWX) for cavity checks are not included in the full mouth x-rays)

  • No patients with full dentures, partial dentures this includes missing teeth on both upper and lower on the same side

  • No patients in orthodontics

  • No patients that are pregnant

  • Patients must be able to tolerate a size 2 adult sensor. Please ask your patients in advance how they typically handle dental X-rays. If a patient is unable to tolerate the X-ray process during their appointment, you will be required to bring a replacement patient who meets all criteria to a future

  • Signed Dentist Authorization and CDE’s Health History forms filled out and signed by a licensed Dentist.

If you do not have patients who meet these requirements, choose a later session to allow time for documentation.


Important Notes


All x-rays must be taken under the supervision of a board-approved radiation safety course.Your Dental X-Ray Certificate must be displayed at the facility where you take x-rays.


PPE Requirements


Per CDC guidelines, students are required to wear full PPE during the course. Please bring:

  • 8 disposable face masks (Level 2 or higher)

  • 1 box of properly fitted medical-grade gloves

  • 3 disposable isolation gowns or a lab jacket (with cuffs and front closures)

  • Safety glasses, prescription glasses with side shields or optional face shield with prescription glasses
