About the Course
We are a California Dental Board-approved provider for the Dental X-Ray Course. This course meets all requirements for obtaining a Dental X-ray Certificate. It is suitable for any member of the dental office, as it benefits dental assistants, sterilization techs, and front office staff,
The prerequisites you must have before being admitted to class are the 8-hour infection control, BLS, and four patients who have signed authorization letter to take x-rays from their dentist. If you do not have these, do not sign up for this class yet; sign up for another that will give you time to get these documents. These are all the Dental Board requirements.

Class Outline:
The lecture portion is a home study that includes anatomical landmarks related to dental radiology, radiology basics, infection control, and radiology equipment. You will be given a preliminary exam to complete and bring with you to the first day of class, this is mandatory. After the lecture portion, a final exam will be given on the first day of class.
The lab/preclinical portion is at our Rocklin, CA, office. It includes infection control, bitewing exposure, periapical, bisecting, paralleling technique, and digital imaging on manikins. At California Dental Educators, we use the handheld NOMAD for exposure to X-rays. For the preclinical portion, you will expose two sets of four bitewings and three sets of 18 full-mouth series on a practice manikin. The manikin x-rays must be completed before moving onto your clinical patients.
During the clinical portion of the course, you’ll bring your four patients to our Rocklin office, one at a time, during their scheduled appointment times.
Clinical Patients:
You must bring four patients to the clinical class date.
Patient criteria must meet the requirements of :
* No full mouth series (18 films), panoramic, or cephalometric x-rays in the past year
* Must be 18 years of age
* Patient is not pregnant
* Patient is not in orthodontics
* Patient does not have full dentures
* Patient is able to have our health history and dental authorization for x-rays signed off by a dentist.
Patient Times:
When you register, you’ll receive a number based on your registration order. This determines your patient schedule:
If you receive an even number (2 or 4) your patient times will be: patient # 1 - Saturday at 4:00 PM, patient # 2 - Sunday at 9:00 AM, patient # 3 - 11:00 AM, and patient # 4 - 1:00 PM
If you receive an odd number (1, 3, or 5) your patient times will be: patient # 1 - Saturday at 5:00 PM, patient # 2 - Sunday at 10:00 AM, patient # 3 - 1:00 PM, and patient # 4 - 3:00 PM
During these appointments, you’ll put your preclinical training into practice and take X-rays on your patients. Don’t worry, your instructor will be there to support you every step of the way!
All dental personnel must pass a board-approved radiation safety course before taking X-rays on patients in your dental office. The Certificate must be posted in the facility where the X-rays are taken.

PPE Requirements:
CDC guidelines indicate that each student must wear all PPE. You will need approximately the following PPE for the course:
8 disposable face masks, level 2 or higher
1 box of medical-grade examination gloves appropriately fitted
3 disposable isolation gowns or lab jackets with cuffs and button or zipper front
Safety goggles or glasses with side shields
Face Shield (optional)
